Designed for true mountain lovers in good physical shape, this is the most complete and challenging pass in the Valle del Cocora. It begins with a high-altitude horseback ride to palm viewpoints #1 and #2, home to the largest concentration of wax palms you can visit on horseback, combining the thrill of riding with a deep connection to the landscape.
After the ride, a roughly 10 km hike begins through pine forests and palm valleys to a mountain farm overlooking Cerro Morrogacho. Your effort is rewarded with a visit to the Acaime reserve, the House of Hummingbirds, with a snack included, the descent through the mystical cloud forest and the famous hanging bridges, wrapping up with a full lunch. The starting point is Parqueadero La Esperanza, which you reach on your own (this pass does not include transportation).

What will you experience?
Your expedition begins at Parqueadero La Esperanza, in the Valle del Cocora. After getting ready, you set off on a high-altitude horseback ride through the El Planchón area toward palm viewpoints #1 and #2, home to the highest density of wax palms that can be visited on horseback.
Then you embark on a roughly 10 km hike that challenges your senses: you climb through pine forests and palm valleys to a mountain farm with a prime view of the imposing Cerro Morrogacho. Your effort is rewarded with a stop at the Acaime reserve, the House of Hummingbirds, where you rest with an included snack while watching hummingbirds just inches away.
The way back is pure cloud forest: you descend along Andean jungle trails and cross the famous hanging bridges over the river. The day ends with a full lunch in the Valley (trout, pork, chicken or vegetarian) to recharge after conquering the heart of Cocora.
Departure times
We offer several departure times in the morning so you can choose the one that best suits your pace; you can select the available time when booking. Since this is a 6- to 8-hour trek, this pass always starts early and requires advance booking to guarantee your spot and coordinate the logistics of the activities (horseback ride, guide, entrance fees and lunch). We recommend arriving 10 minutes before the start to make the most of the day.

This pass does not include transportation. The starting point is Parqueadero La Esperanza in Valle del Cocora, which you can reach in your own vehicle or by public Jeep Willys departing from the main square in Salento.
It's high intensity. Besides the horseback ride, you'll hike 3 to 4 hours (about 10 km) over terrain with steep slopes and technical descents. Good physical fitness and a readiness for the mountains are required.
It's recommended for young people and adults in good physical shape. Due to the length of the hike, it's not advisable for small children or people unaccustomed to mountain hiking. For a gentler plan, we have other passes.
Yes. For this pass, a guide is essential due to the length of the route (10 km) and the crossings through the cloud forest. It's included in the plan.

Hiking shoes with good grip, layered athletic clothing, a waterproof jacket, sunscreen, a cap, insect repellent, plenty of water, a light backpack, a charged camera or phone, and cash.
Mountain weather is changeable, and the activity goes ahead as normal in light rain (that's why a waterproof jacket is key). It's only rescheduled when the weather poses a risk to your safety.
