Valle del Cocora is about 11 kilometers from Salento, the town that serves as its gateway. The trip is short, but it helps to know how the transportation works, what time to leave, and what to expect on arrival so you can make the most of your day. In this guide we cover your options, step by step.
Where Valle del Cocora Is
The valley is in the municipality of Salento, in the Quindío department, in the heart of Colombia's Coffee Region. It sits about 2.400 meters above sea level in the Central Cordillera and is famous for its wax palms, Colombia's national tree, which can exceed 50 meters in height.
To get there, first you need to be in Salento. From Armenia, the capital of Quindío, there are frequent buses during the day, and the trip takes about an hour. From Pereira the journey is a bit longer.
Option 1: the Willys jeep from the Salento town square
The most traditional way to get there is by Willys jeep, the classic vehicles of the region. They leave from Salento's main square and cover the route to the valley entrance in about 25 to 30 minutes, along a paved road winding through mountains and coffee farms.
- How it works: the jeeps are shared and leave when they fill up or according to the cooperative's schedule. It's common to ride standing in the back, which is an experience in itself.
- Schedules: the first jeeps leave very early in the morning, and there are departures throughout the day. Times change with the season, so confirm them at the square the day before.
- Return trip: jeeps also wait at the valley entrance to take you back to Salento. During high season, lines form in the mid-afternoon.
Option 2: transportation with entrance fee included
If you'd rather skip the lines and the schedule planning, you can book transportation and entrance to Valle del Cocora as a single plan. It's convenient if you're traveling with children, in a group, or short on time.
Option 3: private transportation
For families, groups, or anyone who wants to combine Cocora with other destinations the same day (Filandia, coffee farms, or the Santa Rita waterfall), private transportation from Salento gives you complete freedom with schedules and stops.
Option 4: walking or cycling
It's possible to walk from Salento along the road, but it's about 11 km of constant uphill climbing, sharing the road with vehicles. We only recommend it for experienced hikers and good weather. Cycling is a demanding challenge because of the steep grade.
What You'll Find on Arrival
The valley entrance is a small hamlet with trout restaurants, shops, and farms, and the trails start from there. Keep in mind that much of the valley is on private land, which is why the farms charge their own entrance fee to hike their trails and viewpoints. If you want to have admission sorted out, you can buy entrance to the palm forest in advance.
The trails range from short one- or two-hour walks among the palms to the long route through the Hummingbird House (Acaime), which takes five to six hours. If it's your first time and you want something easy, a short walk with a local guide is a great way to explore the valley without overexerting yourself.
Tips for Your Visit Day
- Go early. Mornings are usually clearer, and in the afternoon clouds or rain often roll in.
- Bring cash. Farm entrance fees, jeeps, and many restaurants in the area work better with cash.
- Wear appropriate footwear. The trails can be muddy, especially in the rainy season. Waterproof boots or firm-soled shoes make a difference.
- Bring a warm layer and a rain jacket. It's colder in the valley than in Salento, and the weather changes quickly.
- Respect the environment. Stay on the trails and don't leave any trash: wax palms grow very slowly and are a protected species.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much time do you need to explore Valle del Cocora?
With half a day you can take a short walk among the palms. If you want to complete the full circuit through the Hummingbird House, book the entire day.
Can you visit without a guide?
Yes, the main trails can be explored on your own. A local guide adds safety, history, and information about the plants and wildlife, and is recommended for the longer routes or if you're traveling with children.
Do you need to book in advance?
You don't need to book for the jeep at the square. For plans that include transportation, a guide, or entrance, it's a good idea to book ahead, especially in high season, long holiday weekends, and at year's end.
