About this tour

The Romerales Páramo Trek is a two-day, one-night expedition that crosses Colombia's Central Andes on foot, between Quindío and Tolima. It's one of the most complete high-mountain treks you can do from Salento: in a single route you go from the wax palm forest of Valle del Cocora to the cloud forest, then the high Andean forest and, finally, the páramo ecosystem, one of the most fragile and valuable on the planet.

More than a hike, it's an immersion in high-altitude rural culture and in the landscapes that make the Coffee Region a unique destination. It's ideal for adventurous travelers in good physical shape looking to disconnect, enjoy pristine nature and take on the challenge of going above 4,000 meters.

Expedition fact sheet

What will you experience?

The route begins in Valle del Cocora and climbs through frailejones, streams and absolute silence up to Finca La Primavera (3,750 m), where you spend the night surrounded by mountains. The next day you conquer Alto de La Línea, at 4,000 meters, the highest point of the trek and the natural border between Tolima and Quindío.

The descent takes you through the Cárdenas River basin, past traditional farms where a hot soup awaits, before wrapping up the route back in Valle del Cocora. You'll find the detailed day-by-day itinerary further down this page.

Difficulty level and fitness

This is a demanding route that requires good physical condition and being used to long hikes. It climbs up to 4,000 m above sea level, so altitude sickness (soroche) is a factor to consider: staying hydrated and following the guide's pace are key. Previous experience with long hikes or a prior páramo trek is recommended.

What to bring (required gear)

  • Head: thermal beanie, sun cap, buff, UV-filter sunglasses and headlamp.
  • Body (layering system): thermal shirts (base layer), fleece or down jacket (insulation), waterproof jacket and quick-dry pants.
  • Feet: high-top boots with good grip (preferably waterproof) and a change of shoes for the shelter.
  • Accessories: 35-40 L backpack with rain cover, trekking poles, sunscreen and water bottle (at least 1.5 L).

Tips and safety

  • High-mountain weather is changeable (rain, fog and wind); a layering system is essential.
  • For altitude sickness, the only remedy is to descend; the guide is trained to identify symptoms.
  • Horseback transport due to fatigue or altitude sickness is optional, at an additional cost and subject to availability.
  • Route within the buffer zone of PNN Los Nevados, with a specialized guide and medical insurance included.

Departures and bookings

This expedition requires advance booking. To confirm your spot, we ask for a 50% deposit via payment link, and the remaining 50% is paid the day before the activity. The route usually ends in Salento between 3:00 and 6:00 p. m. on the last day; we recommend not scheduling flights that same afternoon.

Itinerary

We start early in Salento with a traditional breakfast alongside our guide. A Jeep Willys takes us about 25 minutes to the Valle de Cocora, home of the wax palms, where the hike begins. The ascent leads us through the lush cloud forest and the high Andean forest until we enter the páramo ecosystem; along the way we enjoy a trail lunch surrounded by the scenery. After about 7 hours of trekking we reach Finca La Primavera (3,750 m), our mountain refuge, where we have dinner and spend the night surrounded by mountains.

We set off at 7:00 a.m. on a loop that climbs to Alto de La Línea, at 4,000 m above sea level, the highest point of the trek and the natural border between Tolima and Quindío. From there we descend through the Cárdenas River basin, passing the Buenos Aires and La Argentina farms, where hot soup awaits as we enjoy birds, forests, and unique panoramic views. After a long but delightful descent we return to the Valle de Cocora, where transportation takes us back to Salento to share a traditional lunch and wrap up this great mountain adventure.

Frequently asked questions

  • Head: Thermal beanie, sun cap, buff, UV-filter sunglasses, and headlamp.

  • Body (Layering System): Thermal shirts (base layer), fleece/down jacket (insulation), waterproof jacket, and quick-dry pants.

  • Feet: High-ankle boots with good grip (preferably waterproof). A change of shoes for the refuge.

  • Accessories: 35-40L backpack with rain cover, trekking poles, sunscreen, and water bottle (min. 1.5L).

It is a demanding trail. It requires good to excellent physical fitness and being used to long hikes carrying weight. Altitude sickness (soroche) is a factor, so staying hydrated is key.

It is an authentic mountain refuge. Beds are shared and facilities are basic (shared bathroom). It's part of the experience of disconnecting and mountain living.

The guide will assess the situation. Using horses for transport has an additional cost and is subject to availability at nearby farms.

Prior experience with long-distance hikes or having done the Páramo tour is recommended. The 4,000 m altitude requires good cardiovascular fitness.

Our guides are trained to identify symptoms. We recommend staying constantly hydrated and following the pace set by the guide. Using horses for an emergency descent has an additional cost.

It includes a specialized guide, meals, lodging in mountain refuges, and transportation from Salento. Luggage transport by mule can be added as an option; message us to confirm the price and maximum weight. You'll see the details and price when you choose your date in the booking form.

The price per person (in Colombian pesos, taxes included) appears directly in the booking form on this page: choose your date and number of people and you'll see the total instantly.

The medical insurance policy covers horseback and ground transfers if needed, medical care, and medication. Keep in mind that altitude sickness is the body's reaction to altitude, and the only way to improve is to descend.

The trek usually ends in Salento between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. at the latest, depending on the weather and the group's pace. In high season there are more visitors and transportation may take a bit longer. We recommend not booking flights for that same afternoon; if you travel that day, do it at night or spend the last night in Salento.

The trek runs as normal under the changing conditions of the high mountains (rain, fog, or wind). Only in case of extreme weather that compromises safety will the guide adapt the itinerary or begin a safe return. If there is a closure due to force majeure or by order of the authorities, we offer to reschedule the date or an equivalent alternative route according to our contingency policies.

Following the August 2026 earthquake, El Edén Airport and the access roads are operating normally after inspections and preventive maintenance by the authorities. Travel is safe, and you'll have no trouble getting to the region.

You'll find the list of mandatory gear on this same page (see the "Mandatory Gear" question). If you'd rather not carry extra weight on your flight, the Kilómetro Cero store in Salento lets you buy or rent some of the gear.

To confirm your spot, we require a 50% deposit via a Bold payment link; the remaining 50% can be paid in cash the day before the activity. See the details in our Cancellation Policy.

Yes. Since this plan includes lodging or camping, cancellation is free up to 3 days (72 hours) before the start: we refund 100% of what you paid, with no fees. You can also change the date at no cost with 3 or more days' notice, subject to availability. With less than 3 days' notice, or if you don't show up, the booking is non-refundable. See our Cancellation Policy.

Excellent service. Our guide was Jefry, a biologist from the Universidad del Quindío, who answered all our questions about the wildlife and plants. He was very kind and attentive. If you're going to visit this wonder of Colombia, I recommend this agency.
