About this tour

Embark on a journey that goes beyond the visual. This hiking tour takes you into the heart of Valle del Cocora to explore, on foot and at a relaxed pace, the most beautiful and extensive wax palm valleys in the entire Coffee Region. More than a hike, it's an open-air master class: our local guide's interpretation turns the trail into an experience of deep learning.

It starts in Salento, aboard a traditional Jeep Willys that takes you to the valley. Along the way, you'll learn about the life cycle of the wax palm, its importance to the ecosystem, and the history of the surrounding mountains, with 360-degree viewpoints and an optional photo circuit. It's the ideal choice to connect, learn, and capture the true essence of Quindío without extreme physical demands.

What will you experience?

Your adventure begins in Salento, where you're picked up at your hotel or at our office (Calle 2 #6-09) and board a traditional Jeep Willys for a ride of about 20 minutes to Valle del Cocora.

There you'll start a 2- to 3-hour guided hike, adjustable to your pace, through the densest and most beautiful wax palm valleys in the Coffee Region. Your interpretive guide explains the life cycle of the wax palm, its role in the cloud forest ecosystem, and the history of these mountains, while helping you spot native birds and plants.

You'll climb to natural viewpoints with 360-degree views over the Quindío River basin and canyon and, if you like, take the optional photo circuit with the Blue Hand, the condor's nest, the Jeep with the flag, and the themed stations. If you prefer just nature, we'll keep exploring the trails. At the end, you return to Salento by Jeep.

Itinerary

We meet at our main office on Calle Real (across from Hotel Mahalo) or pick you up at your hotel in Salento's urban area. It's time to meet your guide and get your senses ready for the change in climate and scenery.

We begin a 20-minute ride to the Valley in the most iconic vehicle of the Coffee Region. You'll enjoy the fresh air and your first views of the green mountains while we share fun facts about the region.

We begin the 2- to 3-hour hike. This is where your guide takes center stage, explaining the importance of the Wax Palm and how this cloud forest ecosystem is vital to Colombia's water supply.

We'll reach the areas with the highest density of palms in the entire department. You'll walk surrounded by these giants up to 60 meters tall, in a natural setting that few tourists ever get to know in depth.

We'll reach strategic high points to take in the Quindío River basin and the full splendor of the canyon. It's the perfect place to stop, breathe deeply, and grasp the vastness of the coffee cultural landscape.

If you want to capture the perfect memory, we'll visit the Blue Hand, the Condor's Nest, the Jeep with the flag, and the local wildlife figures. If you prefer pure nature, we'll keep exploring untouched trails.

We finish the hike with a closing talk and head back to town in our private Jeep. We'll drop you off at your hotel or the main square, just in time to enjoy the local food.

I took my tour in January. Juan and César were my driver and guide, and I took a tour of the Valle de Cocora and a waterfall. They were incredible! Very kind, fun and expert. César even took photos for me, since I was traveling alone, and took incredible pictures! I highly recommend them, and personally

I recommend buying tickets in advance in town. Search for Cocoratours on Google and you will get the exact address of the office in town; there they will tell you where the valley is, about a half-hour drive away.
